Heating that reaches the far bedroom

Cold spots, noisy pipes, a room that never warms up. Most of it is the system rather than the heat source, and it is cheaper to fix than people expect.

What's involved

Heating in detail

Radiators, valves and balancing

Adding a radiator, moving one for a new kitchen, or swapping seized valves for thermostatic ones. Where the pipework allows we run new legs rather than cutting a floor open twice.

Balancing is the step most firms skip: adjusting flow at each radiator so the far bedroom warms at the same rate as the hall. It takes an hour and regularly saves people from buying a bigger heat source.

  • New, moved or replaced radiators
  • Thermostatic valves fitted and set
  • Full balance with temperature readings
  • Towel rails and vertical radiators

Power flushing and system cleaning

Radiators cold at the bottom, banging pipework, a system that never quite heats: that is sludge. We take flow and return readings before and after, so you can see what the work achieved rather than take our word for it.

A magnetic filter and the right inhibitor stop it coming back. If the readings say your system is clean, we will tell you and not sell you a flush.

  • Readings taken before and after
  • Magnetic filter fitted as standard
  • Inhibitor dosed and recorded
  • Half a day on a typical flat or house

Controls, thermostats and zoning

Thermostats and zone valves fitted and, more to the point, set up properly with you standing there. Most homes lose more heat to a badly programmed timer than to a tired heat source.

Upstairs and downstairs zoned separately, or room by room where the pipework allows, so you are not heating empty bedrooms all evening.

  • Smart and conventional thermostats
  • Zone valves and wiring centres
  • Separate zones where pipework allows
  • App left working on your phone

Cylinders and hot water

Unvented cylinders installed and certificated, old tanks and loft storage removed, immersions and expansion vessels replaced when they fail.

Poor pressure is measured rather than guessed: a new cylinder will not fix a weak incoming main, and we would rather tell you before you spend the money.

  • Unvented cylinders, G3 certificate
  • Immersions, valves, expansion vessels
  • Flow and pressure measured
  • Old tanks removed and taken away

Underfloor heating

Wet systems in extensions and bathrooms: manifold sized, floor build-up checked before anything is ordered, system commissioned and left with a written schedule.

Worth planning before the screed goes down. Retrofitting into an existing floor is possible but rarely the cheapest route to a warm room.

  • Manifolds sized and commissioned
  • Floor build-up checked first
  • Zone by zone control
  • Written commissioning record
Thermal camera image of a heating manifold showing 48.3°C on the flow and 28.9°C and 27.1°C on two return circuits
A manifold read with a thermal camera: 48.3°C going out, 28.9°C and 27.1°C coming back. Cold spots stop being a guess once you can see the split.
Thermal image of an underfloor heating circuit, the loops visible through the screed between 21.7°C and 25.3°C
Underfloor loops seen through the screed. Where a circuit has stopped flowing, it shows up here before a single tile is lifted.

Questions

Asked most often

One radiator never gets hot. Expensive?

Usually not. It is a valve, trapped air or a balance problem far more often than anything serious. An hour on site normally settles it.

Do I need a power flush?

Only if the system is sludged. Cold spots at the bottom of radiators and banging pipework are the signs. The readings before and after tell you whether it worked.

Can you work on heating without gas?

Yes — that is most of what we do. Electric boilers, heat interface units on communal networks, cylinders, radiators and controls.

How long does a radiator take?

A straight swap is an hour or two. Moving one, or adding to an existing circuit, is usually half a day.

Not sure what you need?

Describe what's happening and Ivan will tell you straight whether it needs someone tonight or can wait until Monday. That call costs nothing either way.
